Grizzlies drop two on day two of Crossover
ASC records just four hits in losses to Warriors, Golden Bears
PUEBLO, Colo. – One day after opening their season with a win against a nationally-ranked opponent the Grizzlies were unable to get much going on offense Saturday, slapping just four hits in a pair of losses to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foes Winona State (Minn.) and Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.).
The Grizzlies fall to 1-2 after two days of play this season with the losses. Winona State, which won both of its Saturday games, is now 3-1 on the season, while Concordia-St. Paul sits 2-2 this season after splitting with Adams State and Nebraska-Kearney Saturday.
ASC was helped out by Warriors pitcher Stacey Struzynski in game one to get on the board in the top of the first inning. Junior Katelyn Lovato (Northglenn, Colo.) drew a leadoff walk before the next two Grizzly batters struck out. Lovato then stole second before freshman Erica Haugum (Arvada, Colo.), junior Jordan Schoepflin (Arvada, Colo.) and freshman Erica Ecsedy (Saugus, Calif.) each drew their own walks to bring Lovato across to score.
But the Grizzlies would not reach base again in the game, as Struzynski would toss a no-hitter and strike out 12, retiring ASC in order in the second through sixth innings of a 6-inning, 9-1 Winona State win. It was nearly a year ago to the day that the Grizzlies were last no-hit, as they suffered a similar offensive laps against Minnesota State on Feb. 19, 2011, during the NSIC/RMAC Crossover in Rochester, Minn.
The Warrios put up runs in the even numbered innings, scoring four in both the second and fourth and the game-ending run in the sixth. Senior Molly Link, last year’s NSIC Player of the Year had three hits and drove in three runs, all on 3-run homer in the second. The Warriors also got a 3-run shot from Kim Wacholder in the fourth.
Game two Saturday saw the Grizzlies up 2-0 after the top of the fifth before the Golden Bears would score two in their half of the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 3-2 win.
Adams State again scored in the top of the first, as sophomore Carly DeLorenzo (Arvada, Colo.) swiped second and third, putting herself in position to score on a sacrifice fly from senior Rebecca Lindquist (Fort Collins, Colo.).
That lead was doubled in the fifth when senior Lizzy Schossow led the frame off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by pitcher Brandi Lovato (West Valley City, Utah), and came around to score when Concordia-St. Paul overthrew the first baseman on a ball put in play by Katelyn Lovato.
The golden Bears tied the game in the bottom of inning five, slapping three singles in inning, including a one from Callie Brennan that drove in two runs. Another three single sixth inning would drive across the game-winner for the Golden Bears.
Lindquist, Schoepflin, Schossow and freshman Symmone Loomis-Dotson (Longmont, Colo.) each accounted for one of ASC’s four hits Saturday.
Brandi Lovato went the distance in game two, but fell to 1-1 with the loss after giving up 10 hits. Redshirt-freshman Michelle McNally (La Habra, Calif.), 0-1 on the season, started game one of the day for ASC and lasted 2.0 innings before giving way to freshman Linda Hernandez (Pueblo, Colo.).
The Grizzlies will be in action to finish their trip to the NSIC/RMAC Crossover at noon on Saturday, facing associate RMAC member Black Hills State (S.D.). The Yellow Jackets are 0-4 this season after losses to host Colorado State-Pueblo and Colorado Mesa Friday, and UC-Colorado Springs and Nebraska-Kearney Saturday.
