ASC grapplers struggle at NCAA DII national meet


OMAHA, Neb. – What a long strange trip it’s been.
The Grateful Dead performed that song and at times it’s applicable in sports and this year it is the best line that applies for the Adams State College wrestling team. The Grizzlies began the season with a great deal of promise and experienced setbacks throughout the season.
In the end, the team that was supposed to challenge for the national title was limited to four grapplers at the NCAA Division II national wrestling tournament and it was nowhere near enough bodies to challenge the likes of host University of Nebraska-Omaha. The Mavericks won their second consecutive national title and did it in convincing fashion.
The domination was so evident that the Mavericks didn’t even have to win a single match in the finals, much less compete. UNO secured the national championship after three rounds.
Sure, the Mavericks won only one of four finals matches Saturday evening at Sapp Fieldhouse, but it mattered not. Nebraska-Omaha had long since secured its second consecutive Division II national wrestling championship.
The title was the fifth in seven years for UNO and the program’s seventh overall national title, which includes the 1970 NAIA crown. [+]

Western State defends Super Regional/RMAC Championship

ALAMOSA, Colo.— Using the efforts of three individual champions and seven qualifiers for the NCAA Division II National Championships, the Western State College Mountaineers won their second straight NCAA Super Regional Four/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestling Championship, Saturday here at Plachy Hall.  The Mountaineers, who received individual championships from top-seeded Charlie Pipher,  Donovan McMahill and Charlie Alexander in the 184, 197 and 285-pound weight classes, respectively, scored 121 ½ points.
